The Mysteries of Color Removal

The Discharge Bath

Coming up in early summer at ProChem is my course called Dyeing to Discharge.

Evocative, mysterious shadows reveal themselves in discharge techniques. A variety of patterning techniques will be explored, as we learn about both oxidative discharge (bleach) and reductive discharge (Thiox and deColourant) on both cotton and silk.

This is such a fun class to teach, jammed as it is with ways to remove color from cloth and then put it back in. Students really enjoy the wide variety of patterning, and the incredible effects that can be achieved no other way.

I thought you might enjoy seeing some work students have done in past workshops.

Samples of Student Work

We also enjoy applying our knowledge to a variety of t-shirts and wearables.

Students create tees with discharge techniquesIn my next post, I will discuss some tests I have been doing with a technique called Illumination Discharge, where color is removed and replaced in one step.

If you want my look at the class, I posted for three days, maybe more, on my blog. Follow the link to discharge, or click on 2008 entries. http://www.dippydye.blogspot.com

Your post on MXdyers sent me. I’m really loving the look of the blog – all the colors in the photographs across the top made me smile. I’m looking forward to your newsletter!
I loved the Discharge course when I took it in Coupeville and highly recommend it. It gave me a very firm foundation in the basics, plus plenty of time to play.

Bravo on your new website and blog! You know I’m a huge fan. I was so proud to see my wheel of color among your banner photographs. I use those index card color chips as much or more than my color bible. I’m so glad you suggested that. Can’t wait for my next Carol class, although sadly, I’m not sure when that will be.
Congratulations on your new grandbaby. How exciting that must be!

Your color deck is a great addition Lisa. You did such a nice job with it. So glad you like the website. If I could pick a next class for you, it would be Layers Upon Layers! That is a great class for someone with such an individual voice…..

The workshop page came up blank. The calendar page works though. I’m trying to figure out what is the next workshop I want to take. So glad you’ll be at Pro Chem as that is only 3 hrs from my house!

Jeanne, by any chance, were you looking on an iPad? I am having trouble with my dropdown menu on the iPad. I made some changes. Check the page again and see if you can navigate to the workshop listings. Thanks for letting me know!

If you have any questions about which class, ask away!
